Dental Do’s and Don’ts

It feels like it’s been forever since our last installment of the blog! In this edition of the blog we’re going to share a quick list of little things you can do to keep your smile healthy and bright.

Dental Do’s:

Lets start with the positive things to be doing to keep your teeth healthy and strong.

1.Brush your teeth at least 2x/day and floss at least 1x/day (we like to recommend before bed). Keeping your teeth clean between your cleaning visits will reduce the possibility of bleeding gums and development of cavities. Not to mention it will keep your breath smelling good and your smile bright.

2.Be sure to get into the office every 6 months for a cleaning and exam. This allows us the opportunity to get the plaque and calculus off your teeth in hard to clean places and detect problems like cavities at early stages so they don’t develop into more serious problems.

3.Change your tooth brush regularly! A toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months. Once it gets worn out the bristles begin to break and are rougher on your gums. Not to mention they don’t clean nearly as well as unbroken bristles.

4.Change your toothbrush anytime you’re recovering from an illness. This will prevent you from getting sick again later. Not to mention that it will help prevent whoever else you share the toothbrush holder with from getting sick.

5.Use a mouth rinse that contains fluoride to help protect your teeth from cavities. Fluoride helps re-mineralize and strengthen enamel.

Dental Don’ts:

1.Don’t smoke! Smoking not only will stain your teeth and lead to bad breath, but it is often one of the leading factor in the development of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss! We highly recommend avoiding smoking or quitting it for your overall health and the health of your smile.

2.Don’t brush too hard. Brushing with excessive force may contribute to recession of gum tissues and may cause unnecessary bleeding.

3.Don’t snack on junk food or sip sweetened beverages throughout the day. Junk foods like sweets and sodas contain high amounts of sugars that can lead to the development of cavities. Bacteria convert the sugar to lactic acid and decay the teeth.

4.Don’t fear the dentist! If you avoid us now, you may pay for it in the future. Small problems can develop into bigger problems leading to the need for more advanced treatment like root canals, tooth extraction, or dental implants. We want to help keep your smile healthy, don’t be afraid of us!
