It’s that time of year again when we get our kids ready to head back to school. We got them new clothes, school supplies, and all vaccinations are up to date. Don’t forget about the dental check-up, though! According the CDC 19% of children between ages 2 and 19 have dental decay. Dental pain can lead to problems affecting your child’s confidence, speech, ability to concentrate, and even missed school time. We’re going to review a good checklist to make sure your child has a healthy smile this year!
1.Dental exam: Regular dental exams are an important aspect of a healthy smile and provide an opportunity to make sure problems don’t go unnoticed. Dental decay often doesn’t cause pain until it approaches or reaches the nerve of the tooth. This means that most dental problems are likely unknown by the teacher and parent, further highlighting the importance of regular dental exams. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Long may also recommend sealants and fluoride to help protect your child’s teeth from developing decay.
2.Good home care: It is important that your child is brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least 2 times per day and flossing at least once. This will help remove plaque and keep their teeth clean between dental visits. We recommended replacing your child’s brush every 3 months or after any illness.
3.Healthy snacks and drinks: Make sure your child is limiting soft drink and sugar consumption. We recommend healthy snacks that contain: grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yogurt, and fruit. These treats will help ensure that your child isn’t taking in too many carbohydrates that could contribute to the formation of new cavities.
4.Mouth Guards: If your child is into playing sports, don’t forget the mouth guard! A mouth guard will protect against tooth loss and concussions.
