Is Invisalign Right for You?

Is Invisalign Right for You?

A lot of patients like the idea of aligning their teeth properly to create a beautiful and healthy smile. However, most patients cringe and automatically think of traditional metal and wire braces when the topic of orthodontics is brought up. Invisalign is an invisible aligner that is an excellent alternative to traditional braces that can be removed, cleaned, and maintained with minimal alterations to your lifestyle.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Once you decide to pursue Invisalign treatment, we scan your teeth using our iTero intraoral scanner. This information is sent to Invisalign where they fabricate clear trays that are a custom fit to your teeth. These aligners will shift your teeth into a properly aligned relationship over the next 1.5-2 years.

Factors to Consider

There are many factors involved in deciding if Invisalign treatment is right for you. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Long are here to help answer your questions and decide if Invisalign will best fit your needs. Below we will be providing some important factors to consider regarding Invisalign:

  1. The Health of Your Teeth & Gums

Invisalign is ideal in most scenarios for patients desiring to align their teeth. However, in the presence of severe dental decay and advanced gum disease it is usually not recommended. It is recommended that these conditions be treated and managed before any orthodontic treatment is started.

The dental conditions that Invisalign can treat are:

  • Crowding
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Rotated teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  1. Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

For many years dentists and orthodontists have used traditional metal and wire braces to create beautiful and healthy smiles. However, traditional braces have always caused soft tissue irritation in the mouth and make maintaining proper oral hygiene difficult. Since Invisalign is made of plastic and has smooth contours it often causes much less irritation than traditional metal braces.

Eating is with Invisalign is easier than with traditional braces because you remove the aligner and you don’t have to worry about popping off a bracket with certain foods like you have to with traditional braces. Not to mention it is much easier to clean your teeth and maintain a high level of dental hygiene during treatment. You can brush and floss normally once the aligners are removed. With traditional braces floss threaders and water picks are necessary to keep plaque out from between the teeth.

Finally, Invisalign is more esthetic than traditional braces. Instead of having metal brackets and wires, barely anyone will notice your clear Invisalign trays. Unless examined closely, it is hard to tell that a patient is wearing clear aligners.

  1. Age

Invisalign is a great treatment option for teens with all of their adult teeth and adults who wish to achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.

  1. Commitment!

Finally, you have to be committed to wearing your Invisalign trays for at least 22 hours/day. The ability to remove trays for eating and hygiene cannot be abused. If the trays aren’t worn consistently then the teeth will never move into the alignment that we have planned.
